Valentine Poem

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat

- 1812-1888

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat:

They took some honey, and plenty of money
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy, O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
            You are,
            You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"

Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl,
   How charmingly sweet you sing!
Oh! let us be married; too long we have tarried,
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the bong-tree grows;
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood,
With a ring at the end of his nose,
            His nose,
            His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will."
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince and slices of quince,
   Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
            The moon,
            The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.*

Snow Moon

I'm behind a bit, the Full Moon Of February actually occurred on the second day of the month, alright... so I missed that. We are now in the phase called the Waning Gibbous, 82% of a Full Moon. Another blogger gave me the idea about the moon the other day, however it had been on my mind for a few weeks because of a cookbook, I'll explain a bit later.  First you probably want to know more about the February Moon.....

"Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult."           ~~~~ from The Farmer's Almanac

Therefore, this month, we have the lovely Snow Moon.  The moon is shining so bright these nights and reflecting off the snow, that we thought the neighbors had left a spotlight on outside.  Of course it was the beautiful Snow Moon instead.  I actually took these photos a few months ago, the clouds were illuminated by the reflecting light and made for some interesting images.

Now let me explain about why a cookbook has me thinking about the moon.  Well it is the illustration of course. As you look at the photo below you will see that the words "Cake Secrets" are encircled by a full moon.  That is what attracted me to the cookbook from the beginning, the gorgeous artwork on the front. The lovely swans on a moonlit lake with the dark blue background is just beautiful.

The photo below is of a cookbook from 1925, called "Cake Secrets".  Few of you have probably heard the name Igleheart in association with cake flour, but what about Swans Down? The Igleheart Brothers sold the company long ago, but Swans Down Cake Flour is still around today.

Cake Secrets Recipe Booklet from Igleheart Brothers which became know as Swans Down Cake Flour. Published in 1925 by Ingleheart Brothers of Evansville, IN.  This book sold a few weeks ago. If I ever come across another I will snatch it up!

I digitally cleaned up the image from the cookbook, removed the lettering and turned it into the lovely image above. Unfortunately the original artists name was not mentioned.

Who knew that a cookbook could be so lovely?  I must say that so far this is the prettiest cookbook I've ever come across.  Everyday I find something beautiful to enjoy, whether it be a little cookbook, a fluffy cat or a blue sky.  I hope you find something enjoyable in your day too.

Pitter Patter

Pitter-patter-pitter-patter.... is it rain, or something else?

Summer is here! I'm so excited that we're having some sunny days!
We've been getting lots and lots of rain! I'm not sure if you are aware that much of Minnesota has been getting flooded.  Last week we received about 4 inches of rain over night.  Our little lake was the highest I've ever seen and was up over it's high water mark and into our mowed grass.  I'm glad the rain stopped when it did!

After a flooding incident in the 1960's they put a pumping station in and now control the level of the lake by pumping the water down stream into other lakes and then into the creek. We were glad to see the lake go back down after a couple of days.

Other than that the rain has been great for my garden. The flowers and  weeds are growing taller than ever! Even as I write this, a storm is moving in and we should get more rain. Let's hope not too much.

More Peonies....

Blue Delphiniums and Yellow Sundrops

We also had a Strawberry Moon last week and I went out to snap a photo.  It doesn't show near the detail in the moon as I had hoped, but that's the best I could get with my point and shoot camera.

Last week after all the rain, I was backing out of my garage and wondering what some walkers were gawking and pointing at in my driveway.  As I slowly backed out, I saw to the left of my driveway a huge snapping turtle digging a nest for her eggs!  I didn't take a picture because she raised her head and was giving me the evil eye! I did not want to disturb her anymore than I already had by opening the garage door and driving a huge metal beast out just when she was doing something that should really be private!!

I have marked my calendar though and in about three months we should be hearing the pitter-patter of little baby Snappers!!

The common adult Snapping Turtle weighs from 9 to 35 pounds and may live around 30 years. They can be aggressive on land, so I chose not to mess with the big mama! I've heard that in the water they are not interested in people and will swim away and hide on the bottom. They are prehistoric looking creatures and quite interesting.  We have observed the two snappers romantically involved in the lake!

Below is a baby snapper.  I've found them in the yard, or I should say, Guy has found snappers and other turtles in the yard before. They are usually about two inches in diameter. I carry them down to the lake and they jump right in and swim off.

Independence Day is  soon approaching as are my house-guests! I probably won't be back here to my blog until after the 4th of July, but I will try and get around and visit some of your long neglected blogs! It appears my blog list is working again and your blogs will be much easier for me to keep track of.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hey It's May

How did that happen so soon? The older I  get, the quicker time seems to pass.  Even though I turned the calendar page last week, it just really kind of dawned on me that, "Wow, it's already May".

Anyhow, there is no real post today as I did a guest post for Isabella at Sweet Zen Life. Please hop over to check out her interesting blog if you have time today.  I did come across this pretty picture that I have had on my PC for ages. I think it was part of an image package but unfortunately there is no information on the artist. I love it though! It has everything that I adore; Birds, flowers, a violin (music), the moon and of course... an angel.

Here's to a great week!
