New Year 2019

Scene at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

I'm not big on New Year's resolutions, but this year I'll try to do the following...

I'll do my best to be kinder, more patient, more open minded and less judgemental.
It's been hard the last few years, but I'll try and give it a go!

I'll try to look on the bright side of life and enjoy each day by finding the good
in someone or something.  This one is really not very difficult for me,
I've been doing it all my life!

Vintage New Year's Card Featuring Blue Forget-Me-Nots

On difficult days I'll try to remember all the happiness I've had in my life. Pulling out the old photos is a good way of remembering all the fun and interesting people I've met and places I've been. Maybe I'll even pick up the phone and call some old friends I haven't talked to in awhile! Only introverts will understand that this is a challenge!

A Snowy Scene in My Backyard

I will continue to revere nature and its creatures. Again I've been doing this for years. Growing up on a farm, I spent a lot of time on my own exploring the far flung corners of our property and enjoying the pastures, creeks, ravines and wooded areas. All of which contained magical and interesting things! Now I enjoy my own backyard and am blessed to be able to visit our large arboretum that is full of wonderful plants and natural environments.

Happy New Year My Friends!
I hope you've all enjoyed the holidays and are ready to take on the new year. I'm very thankful for all of you that have visited and taken the time to comment on my little blog.
Who knows what the future may hold for us!

Thanksgiving AKA Turkey Day

Thanks a bunch my blogging friends! Nice to see you here! Here in the states we love our Thanksgiving also known as Turkey Day!

Bay and Lemon Turkey

It used to be that Turkey was served only on Thanksgiving and maybe Christmas and it was a very special occasion while growing up in the 1960's and 1970's.  As a kid seeing that huge bird was awe inspiring and drool worthy!

When I was really young we celebrated at my Grandparents and we alternated years as to which side of the family we would visit.  I do remember it was a spectacular feast. The special side dishes that went along with the turkey were also phenomenal!

The Feast

Our menu consisted of....
Roast Turkey
Stuffing or Dressing
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Sweet Potatoes with the Marshmallows on top
Green Bean casserole
Cranberry Apple Jello Salad or Cranberry Fluff or Cranberry Apple Relish Salad (below)

Cranberry Sauce
Dinner Rolls
Relish Plate with olives, baby pickles and carrot and celery sticks; and pickled beets if we were visiting my Dad's parents.
Pumpkin Pie with whipped cream

That was the basic menu, it was long before people started Deep Frying the turkey or brining them or doing whatever the new thing is now!

Now days though we can get turkey all year round and it has lost some of its allure.  But I still love a good roast turkey and the menu hasn't changed too much. The Green Bean casserole is now just steamed green beans (much healthier) but we've made up for that by adding a corn pudding and a scalloped oyster side dish (below) so there has been no reduction in calories!

I have fond memories of those olden days when all the families got together and I got to see my cousins and we ate and laughed and played! Now it's pretty much a get together for a bunch of us older folks to solve the worlds latest crisis and eat as much as we want!

How do you celebrate your Thanksgivings? What are your favorite foods? I know some of you are Canadians and have already celebrated, any juicy stories you'd like to share? Whatever you do or did I hope it was fun and that you enjoyed your time with friends or family!

Happy Thanksgiving!
See you in December!

By Heart

 I know it By Heart!

Have you ever wondered why when we memorize something we say, " I know it by heart"?
I read somewhere that the ancient Greeks believed that it was the heart, and not the brain, where thoughts were held.  Now we know that through the process of repetition, we can learn something "by heart".  Once something has been committed to our memory, we can easily call it up at a moments notice.  So it's silly isn't it, to think that our hearts have memories!

Or maybe it's not silly at all ....

Scientists are studying genetic or DNA Cellular Memory in Organ Transplants. There is evidence that organs in the nervous system (including the heart) do store memories through combinatorial coding by nerve cells.  After numerous reports of heart recipients that took on behaviors and "feelings" emotionally and physically, of their donors, people are wondering if there is some truth to what the Greeks believed.

Through testing on mice, scientists have found that traumatic events can alter DNA and thus be passed on to future generations. So far the experiments have only dealt with the sense of smell which seems to be a more reliable way to test their subjects, especially mice.  More studies on humans are underway.  So is there something in your hearts genetic code that could be warning you against the smell of fried jelly donuts or drawing you towards the smell of a rose?    (source)

I

YOU!

So.... what do you think?

Do you think our hearts can keep memories?
